Attending Wadaag Commons Groundbreaking

Image

Last week, I attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Wadaag Commons, which will be an affordable apartment building for low-income families here in Minneapolis. Our office was able to secure $1.8 million in federal funding to support this project and make it a reality. We're proud to have played a role in making this vision a reality and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on local families.

Visiting Pillsbury Creative Commons

Image

I had the pleasure of visiting the future site of Pillsbury Creative Commons (PCC), an innovative project set to transform the historic home of Pillsbury House + Theatre into a vibrant arts and economic development hub. This exciting initiative promises to be a game-changer for our community, addressing a wide array of needs under one roof. During my visit, I was struck by the vision for PCC and its potential to become a cornerstone of our neighborhood. Projects like Pillsbury Creative Commons remind us of the power of innovative, community-centered development. I'm eager to watch this space evolve and to see the positive impact it will have on our local residents.

Advocating for AANHPI Communities with the White House

Image

Along with Senator Amy Klobuchar, I had the honor of speaking at the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) President's Advisory Commission Economic Summit. This platform allowed me to celebrate the remarkable achievements of AANHPI communities while addressing the systemic inequities they face.

In my address, I emphasized the importance of combating barriers through affordable healthcare, quality education, safe housing, and anti-hate initiatives. I also highlighted my support for refugee rights and family unity, including my co-sponsorship of the Southeast Asian Deportation Relief Act of 2023. This crucial legislation aims to end unjust deportations and provide protections for over 15,000 community members. The AANHPI community's contributions to our nation are invaluable, and I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure their voices are heard and their rights protected.

Community Patrol Walk with MAD DADS

Image

Last week I participated in a patrol walk with MAD DADS, an organization working to combat violence and drug use in our neighborhoods. This organization does life changing work to connect folks with city and county resources who are experiencing addiction and homelessness. These community patrol walks are more than just a show of presence; they're about building relationships, fostering trust, and showing our young people that there are positive male role models who care deeply about their well-being and future.

Chatting with Interns from the Plymouth Youth Center

Image

Recently, our office had the pleasure of meeting with a remarkable group of interns participating in the University of Minnesota and the Plymouth Youth Center (PYC). This initiative is designed to broaden the horizons of PYC high school students through diverse experiences. The program's mission aims to cultivate tech-savvy leaders who are not only prepared to tackle challenges but are also committed to investing in our youth and driving positive change within our communities. Interns are immersed in a curriculum that blends coding, data science, and media production with community service. Programs like this are crucial in preparing the next generation to address the complex challenges we face.

The PACT Act: Expanding Care for Our Veterans

Image

Two years ago, we passed the PACT Act – a game-changer for our veterans facing severe health issues due to toxic exposures. The PACT Act expands VA healthcare and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits, agent orange, and other toxic substances. I've met with numerous Minnesotan families who've benefited from this act. Their stories are both heartbreaking and inspiring, showing the real impact of this legislation on our community. If you're a veteran, or know one, please visit va.gov/pact to check eligibility. Our veterans served us. Now it's our turn to serve them. Let's make sure they get the care they've earned and deserve. Watch my full remarks here
