As the People’s Lawyer, I am unwavering in my commitment to safeguarding the health and rights of Minnesotans. That’s why I’m taking action to hold Big Tobacco accountable for their deceptive practices.
Major tobacco companies currently owe Minnesota over $58 million. They've been underpaying us since 2019 by misrepresenting the terms of our state’s landmark 1998 settlement.
These companies misled the public for years about the dangers of tobacco. Now, emboldened by a significant tax cut, they are attempting to cheat Minnesotans out of the critical funds they’re owed for the damage they caused to our communities.
This is unacceptable, and I will not tolerate it.
This month, I filed a motion to not only reclaim these underpayments, but also to demand interest, civil penalties, and ensure that future payments are made in full.
Let me be 100% clear: This fight is about more than money. It's about holding corporations accountable and protecting our state's resources. It is about standing up for the rights and health of every Minnesotan. Thank you for powering my work and making it possible.
