Earlier this week, I published an op-ed on NorthJersey.com about the urgent need for voters in NJ-11 to reject Mikie’s MAGA insurrectionist opponent, Joseph Belnome, at the ballot box this November. You can read the full piece here.

The bottom line is this: Democracy itself is on the ballot this November.

Trump is the GOP nominee and the Supreme Court just handed him absolute immunity for the crimes he committed while in office. He has never been more emboldened.

That’s why it is all the more shocking to know that Joe Belnome, an unrepentant MAGA extremist, is Mikie’s GOP opponent this November. How could this be?

MAGA extremism doesn’t represent the New Jersey I know and grew up with in South River. But Belnome doesn’t embody those Jersey — or American — values. He has chosen to deny reality and ignore the facts of January 6. No wonder one of his biggest supporters is convicted felon and right-wing conspiracy theorist Roger Stone.

Fortunately, voters have a better choice this November. Mikie has spent a lifetime in service to our country — first as a U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, then as an assistant U.S. Attorney, and now as a U.S. Representative. She has spoken out forcefully against Trump’s attack on our democracy. She knows exactly what it means to put country first, just as my brother Brian did.
