Looking for back-to-school resources? Autism Speaks has got you covered! We encourage all self-advocates, parents/caregivers and school administrators to share these resources with their school community at the start of each school year to ensure a fun and successful experience inside and out of the classroom.

New back-to-school resources for the entire school community

Education doesn’t only happen in the classroom, and it isn’t only for students. Our revised School Community Tool Kit contains helpful handouts for bus drivers, lunch aides, custodians and athletic coaches, among others, to teach them the basics of autism. For general education teachers, we also have great tips to welcome autistic students into the classroom.

Having an autism-friendly experience at the school nurse

Like every other kid, students with autism and other developmental disabilities are likely to visit the nurse’s office with bumps and bruises, headaches and colds and other common ailments. Learn about the common challenges that may lead autistic students to visit the nurse frequently, or even result in the need for an Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP).

Advice from the community: Prepping for back to school

Going back to school after a summer break filled with fun in the sun can be challenging for some, but Autism Speaks is here to help make the transition back into the classroom a bit smoother. Get advice from parents and self-advocates as they share insight on things like preparing for the upcoming school year, utilizing an IEP and making friends along the way. You’ll also hear from one autism dad and his adult son about how to choose the right college and setting yourself up for success before your journey begins.
