There is a new environmental case potentially heading to the Supreme Court that could have a major impact on our ability to set stricter emissions standards for cars and trucks.
The Supreme Court’s recent decision to break 40 years of precedent and overturn the “Chevron doctrine” (essentially making themselves the sole decider on future environmental decisions rather than agency experts) could be a double-edged sword for Republicans.
On one hand, this will make it incredibly difficult to implement our environmental policies by making it easier for conservative judges to strike down our climate and energy rules. But, non-Trump judges could also make it harder for Trump to undo Biden’s climate agenda without their approval.
Look, we’re not happy that the Supreme Court made this massive power grab and has given themselves more power to make environmental-related decisions than the agency experts who have spent their entire careers dedicated to their field of study (think biologists, economists, geologists, chemists, engineers, and so on).
But this decision may have also messed up Trump’s plans to undo our environmental regulations without the backing of federal judges. When the deck is stacked against us, we need to utilize every tool we can find.
That means we have time now to mobilize a robust response and pass good environmental legislation the Supreme Court cannot overturn. We just need your support to take back the House by electing more SEEC climate champions to Congress.
