Dear Friends, Last week, we as Americans celebrated our Independence Day, which marks the beginning of our country’s democracy. For many, this meant celebrating and rejoicing with family and loved ones. For others, a dark cloud continues to loom. This past Sunday marked nine months since the October 7th massacre. It has been 274 days of uncertainty and suffering for the families whose loved ones are still being held hostage in Gaza. Subsequently, we have continued to see more violence in Israel, an alarming rise in antisemitism here and across the world.
During these trying times, it is vital we take steps to ensure the release of the hostages and curb the increase of antisemitism. That is why ADL is proud to be a part of a groundbreaking U.S. Federal lawsuit to hold Iran, Syria, and North Korea responsible for their roles in October 7th. Alongside Crowell & Moring LLP, we intend to pursue justice on behalf of over 125 victims. You can read more about our lawsuit

Meta’s recent decision to expand its hate speech policy regarding those who use the term “Zionist” as a derogatory way to describe Jews or Israelis. These guidelines will help ensure the term is not used online as an antisemitic stereotype, or in a manner that threatens or incites violence.
As Jewish communities in the U.S. and abroad continue to face challenges, know that ADL remains resolute in in our mission to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. Annual SHIELD Awards at the National Press Club. Standing for service, honor, integrity, excellence, leadership, and dedication, the SHIELD Awards are one of ADL’s premier events honoring law enforcement fighting against hate and extremism. The 2024 ADL SHIELD Award recipients included sworn law enforcement officials and civilian personnel from across our region who upheld civil rights protections and who demonstrated unwavering efforts to combat hate and extremism in our communities. The SHIELD Awards are made possible through the generosity of Jared O. Blum & Family.
In June, the D.C. region's education team offered anti-bias trainings for the staff members of two summer camps in Maryland run by Chizuk Amuno Congregation in Pikesville and Lessans Camp JCC in North Bethesda. The staff members learned about bias, and how to respond to incidents when they arise. We wish these fantastic counselors a happy and inclusive summer!
