Team,
Since the first days of the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump has spouted baseless happy talk and failed to take aggressive steps to prepare for or address this crisis. He has utterly failed to lead and the consequences have been deadly.
Now, as the crisis has deepened, the President has been trying to pass the buck to states and governors, blaming them for the lack of adequate testing and the shortages of personal protective equipment and other needed supplies — even though he has the power through the Defense Protection Act to mandate the manufacture of urgently needed supplies, and the ability to direct them to where they’re most needed.
Whether it’s governors or the World Health Organization, Trump is desperate to pass the responsibility onto anyone but himself.
And this week, Trump has been making things even worse by talking about prematurely “re-opening” the economy over the advice of medical experts and without the testing and tracing system we need to have in place to prevent a second wave of infections.
He’s even egging on fringe protestors, some showing up with assault weapons at state capitols, demanding an end to protective lockdowns:
The polls show that despite the economic pain, Americans understand that reopening the economy prematurely would be a catastrophe, and they are overwhelmingly worried about moving too quickly without putting health and safety first.
Reversing social distancing too soon would lead to more Americans needlessly losing their lives, overwhelming our hospitals and causing even more economic damage than we have seen so far. If you agree with me that our response to this pandemic must be guided by science, not extremists, I hope you’ll add your name. It will let us know that you stand with the governors and experts who are leading the way in the absence of presidential leadership.
Show Trump you stand with state governors and medical professionals, and condemn this dangerous behavior now.
Thanks for making your voice heard during this unprecedented time,
Adam
