Hello and welcome to my weekly update!

What a week it has been!

It is the honour of my life to have been elected as the Member of Parliament for the new Gorton & Denton constituency.

Thank you to all of those who supported our campaign and helped deliver a fantastic result.

To the constituents of Gorton & Denton, Burnage, Levenshulme and Longsight, I will work everyday to repay the trust you have shown in me, and I will not let you down.

Our success in Gorton & Denton was thankfully replicated across the country, and my first trip down to Parliament this week felt that extra bit special, as I was heading to serve a Labour Government.

I've not just returned as an MP, but was honoured to accept an appointment from our new PM Keir Starmer as Public Health & Prevention Minister.

I cannot wait to get stuck in and deliver on Labour's ambitious agenda, as well as fulfilling my commitments to my constituents.

Best wishes,

HIGHLIGHTS
Thank you to the people of Gorton & Denton, Burnage, Levenshulme and Longsight, for giving me the honour of representing you in Parliament.

This election marks a historic victory for Labour, the work of change starts now and we will not let you down.

To all those who have voted for and supported me in this campaign, thank you.

My speech at the count.

A big thank you to my friends at Open Kitchen Manchester for organising a celebration in honour of me and Afzal Khan being re-elected as Members of Parliament.

The people of Longsight have been incredibly welcoming since the boundary changes, and I’m proud to be associated with organisations like Open Kitchen, who are doing so much to tackle the scourge of food poverty in the local community.

This week I swore in as the Member of Parliament for Gorton & Denton, by taking the oath of allegiance to His Majesty, King Charles.

To the residents of Gorton & Denton, Burnage, Levenshulme and Longsight, who have sent me to Parliament, thank you, I will not let you down.
I am honoured to have been asked by the Prime Minister to serve as Public Health Minister in the Department for Health & Social Care. Today my appointment was approved by His Majesty the King.

From protecting future generations from the dangers of smoking, tackling childhood obesity, reducing gambling harms, battling health inequalities, ending new HIV cases, or ensuring a laser-like focus on prevention across our health system, this is an area with real potential to have a fundamental impact on people's lives.

I look forward to working with our great ministerial team and playing my part in delivering the change people across our country voted for.

I had a great first day as Public Health & Prevention Minister, settling in to my new office and getting straight to work.

It's been fantastic to meet some of my new colleagues across the Department for Health & Social Care, including one familiar face!

I'm looking forward to getting stuck in over the weeks and months ahead, wasting no time in delivering on Labour's ambitious agenda.

It was great to meet staff at Queen Mary University of London’s Quit Smoking team on my first ministerial visit, and hear about the work they do helping people quit for good.

Smoking cessation services will be a key part of this government’s mission to shift the focus of healthcare from simply treating sickness, to preventing it in the first place.

It was a pleasure to present my first Citizens Award as the MP for Gorton & Denton today, to the Denton institution that is Paz Chohan.

Paz has been trading in Denton for 38 years, firstly at Denton Market and latterly at his shop on the Civic Square, and closed his doors for the final time today.

He was nominated by local resident Carol Stewart in recognition of his years of service to the local community, he will be sorely missed!
