Yesterday, CNBC released its annual ranking of the best state in the country for business—and after two consecutive years in the top-ranking slot, this year, North Carolina fell to the #2 position, coming in second to Virginia. Why? Well, if we look at what CNBC themselves had to say on the matter, a few trends become clear: |
- Virginia’s education system, which CNBC ranked first in the nation, was the single biggest factor in their ranking.
- Meanwhile, North Carolina fell to No. 20 in infrastructure, largely because our capacity hasn’t kept up with our growth.
-
And the article specifically called out that Virginia has flourished under true bipartisan governance, with legislative Democrats able to curb the worst of the GOP’s excesses, like a 15-week abortion ban.
|
In other words, Virginia has invested in its people and its communities. We haven’t, and as our legislature continues to squander our cash reserves and bog us down in partisan extremism, our economic standing is beginning to suffer. If we don’t turn the ship around, it’ll only get worse from here. |
It’s also, you know, only EVERYTHING I’ve been saying since the minute I got to the legislature. It's fine. I'm fine.
|
And if we want to turn the ship around, it means we need to elect Democrats this fall. As your candidate for Treasurer, I’ll be able to use my bully pulpit to make sure North Carolinians are aware of how the GOP has mismanaged our money and left their communities behind. I’m getting out into places that haven’t heard from Democrats in far too long.
We’re presenting a different vision for what North Carolina can be, and if we can stand strong and put resources behind our momentum, that’s how we can start building power again in our state. If we can do that, we can invest in our communities—in education, in infrastructure, in our people—and turn the tide before our economic fortunes slip even further. |

It’s not too late to turn things around—but if we don’t act quickly, it could be. |
