CEP Policy Paper on Financing Terrorism and Social Media to be Presented at April 29 Webinar

(Berlin and New York, N.Y.) – The global networks of ISIS <[link removed]> and al-Qaeda <[link removed]> continue to operate, plan, and execute attacks during the ongoing coronavirus crisis. The arrest of an ISIS-linked cell in Germany on April 15, 2020 is a reminder of that reality. The suspects were also reportedly involved in raising funds for their planned attacks, demonstrating that terror financing activities remain ongoing despite the economic slowdown.

The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) is organizing an update briefing on the ongoing threat posed by ISIS and al-Qaeda as well as the continuing challenges in combating the financing of terrorism.

CEP is honored to engage with two of the leading global specialists on this issue. Ambassador Edmund Fitton-Brown, the coordinator of the ISIL, al-Qaida and Taliban Monitoring Team of the United Nations Security Council, will deliver the keynote address. Jacqueline Shire, the counterterrorism financing expert of the Monitoring Team, will also provide a briefing.

CEP Senior Director Dr. Hans-Jakob Schindler will present the latest CEP policy paper, Financing of Terrorism and Social Media Platforms. The paper is based on recent CEP research concerning the major defensive mechanisms social media platforms can employ against the misuse of their services. It highlights two of the major challenges social media companies continue to face as terror organizations seek to misuse these platforms to finance their activities.

The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session open to all participants.

The webinar will be conducted in English via Zoom.
