This Earth Day we must raise our voices

Dear John,

Last week Fianna Fail and Fine Gael published a draft plan for the next government. We were shocked. It doesn't mention fossil fuels, our commitments under the Paris Agreement and it has no targets to reduce our emissions. This looks like a backslide. We don't have time.

I'll take action for Earth Day and faster and fairer climate action in Ireland.

Last weekend, national media reported the masses of emails coming into TD inboxes demanding faster and fairer climate action. You make a difference. For Earth day, we are stepping it up. FF and FG need to know that we will not stand by while they plan without properly listening to climate scientists. Other parties negotiating with FF and FG need to put down red lines for faster and fairer climate action.

As Greta Thunberg says, our next government must unite behind the science. But this document has no science in it at all! By being so vague, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael are forcing smaller parties to waste time getting them to accept the science, UN targets and agree to things they already agreed to do - like a stronger climate law! The conversation shouldn't be about whether we cut emissions by at least 8% (the minimum we should be doing for a safe equitable home.) The negotiations should be about how we do it. We don't have time.

I'll email my TDs to tell them that this isn't good enough

I'll join the climate community and call my TDs

Calling your TD is one of the most impactful things you can do. Especially from within your 2km radius! Will you join us for Earth day on Wednesday for 30mins to call your local TD? We come together on a zoom call, give you a 10 minute briefing with a link to talking points and tips, we then mute zoom and call our TDs. At the end we come back together and give feedback. We also have policy experts on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Here's what a participant from one of our call-a-thons last week had to say

"My experience was definitely positive and was something I would never have previously done. I managed to make contact with four out of the five in my constituency by phone. I was nervous to begin with but at the end of the day, it’s easy to relay a message when you believe what you are saying." Lucy, Wexford

I'll join to urge my TDs to stand with science and faireness

I'm not free at 5pm on Wed but I'll email my TDs

I'll be honest with you John, I've been anxious and angry since reading FF and FGs document. We need a government that listens to the science and puts people and planet at the center of its plans. I've also been hopeful. I've seen people feeling nervous but still stepping up to email and call their TDs. We know what needs to be done. We know what communities taking action look like.

This is only a draft document, negotiations are ongoing. We can and will demand better. Faster and fairer climate action. Every voice counts. Join us.

I'll raise my voice with the climate community on Earth Day

Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday evening. I'll bring snacks and coffee!

P.S. Calling your TD means that they know that you take this seriously. We have a small window to make this government plan strong on climate action. Join us for our Earth Day community call-a-thon.

P.P.S We made a short video with our reaction to the FF/FG document. Check it out here on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Please share it!

P.P.P.S You can also email your TD's here! The more ways they hear from you the better!
