Dear John,
We’re reaching out to let you know about an important action organized by several community groups across New York. On May 1, thousands of New Yorkers will be participating in a rent strike, withholding their rent payment to stand up against Cuomo’s inaction and demand relief.
Can we count on your support to sign this petition calling for a rent strike?
This pandemic is hitting communities across southern Westchester and The Bronx especially hard: 80% of low-income people in the Williamsbridge and Baychester sections of the Bronx are moderately or severely-rent burdened. In Westchester, 30% of households spend over 50% of their income on rent. Every single person in the country is feeling the effects of Coronavirus, but millions of low-income tenants are at risk for complete devastation if immediate steps aren’t taken.
Luckily, there has been federal legislation introduced in recent days by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. The Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act calls for immediate rent forgiveness for all renters and mortgage forgiveness for homeowners. This is exactly the sort of legislation that I’ll fully support when representing our district -- legislation that meets the urgent needs of the time and is designed with everyday, working people in mind.
Click here to sign onto this petition, and help build pressure to force legislators to take action.
Thank you so much, and we hope you’re staying safe during these dangerous times.
In solidarity,
Andom Ghebreghiorgis
