** A problem so unexpected we were only writing about it 10 years ago... ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
NBC News ([link removed]) (7/7/24) reports: " It’s a common sight across the state: rows of suburban homes topped with solar panels. But as California works toward its ambitious clean energy vision, an almost counterintuitive challenge has emerged: The state is, at times, generating more solar energy than it can handle. It’s to the point where loads of clean energy are going to waste. The phenomenon, which other states are likely to run into as they ramp up their own solar production, has been dubbed the 'duck curve ([link removed]) .' The belly of the duck is the time of day when solar production can exceed demand. Because solar energy relies on the sun, the curve is often most pronounced on sunny days during the spring, when not as many people are using power and running their air conditioning. 'We get into certain times of the year, in the
springtime particularly, when the demand for electricity isn’t that high yet, and we have quite a bit of solar production where, under certain conditions, we actually have more than California can actually use,' said Elliot Mainzer, the CEO of California’s Independent System Operator, which manages 80% of the state’s electricity flow."

** "[Biden's pause on LNG export terminals] has already caused reputational risks and uncertainties, the monetary effects of which are hard to quantify, but resuming the approval process will at least ensure that the pause’s negative impact on US national interest is minimized."

In case you ever wondered about all those "carbon offsets" Special K keeps talking about.

** Economic Times ([link removed])
(7/11/24) reports: " Colombia's Constitutional Court on Wednesday annulled a controversial carbon credit deal in the Amazon rainforest, which six local tribes said had been signed without their consent. Indigenous communities living in the remote area of Pira Parana had accused US-based Ruby Canyon Environmental and Colombian company Masbosques, which acted as an intermediary, of illegally foisting the deal on them. Carbon credits are bought by corporations -- or countries under certain conditions -- from forest preservation or other projects to offset or 'compensate' their greenhouse gas emissions. This money is supposed to go to local communities that protect their home regions from deforestation...According to EcoRegistry, which keeps tabs on carbon credit trading, Latin Checkout then sold the credits to US airline Delta which faces a lawsuit at home for alleged 'greenwashing' by claiming to be carbon-neutral while purchasing questionable carbon offsets. But the tribes said the deal was
signed with false representatives of their communities...Some experts have said there was no real deforestation threat in the area and therefore no emissions 'savings' to be made."

America's freedom molecules have the potential to do so much good around the world. So what does Team Biden do? Stand in the way, of course.

(7/9/24) op-ed: "On February 25th 2022, the European continent woke up to a new and pressing issue of historic magnitude: how to disentangle ourselves from the Russian economy. As a member of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s tripartite presidency, I am acutely familiar with this problem – and the reality that Europe will never achieve this goal without continued U.S. leadership, American goods, and importantly, American energy. Bosnians unfortunately see our past in Ukraine’s present. We persevered through years of war and genocide. The Siege of Sarajevo lasted 1,425 days – the longest siege in modern history. In fact, this week, I arrive in the U.S. to commemorate a new documentary, titled Kiss the Future, chronicling Bosnia’s resilience throughout the siege. The documentary is fascinating – its name comes from U2 frontman Bono, who is part of the story – but it is also an important reminder that peace must be both earned and defended. While I am in the U.S., there remains important work to be
done. Prior to the invasion of Ukraine, Europe imported 155 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia (equal to more than 80% of America’s total gas exports in that same year). In the years since, Europe has made great progress, but we still import billions of cubic meters of Russian gas...It should come as no surprise that Bosnians would prefer to buy from North American if possible. We see the U.S. as a key ally, and still owe a deep gratitude for America and NATO’s role in ending the Bosnian war. We also continue to believe that these trade relationships are mutually beneficial – not just for nations, but for citizens too. At a time of global affordability concerns, all Bosnians, regardless of ethnic background, will benefit from affordable and reliable energy."
