Hi John, long before I was one of the highest-ranking appointed Black women in Congress, I was the little girl you see in this picture:
When I was 13, we moved from deeply segregated El Paso, Texas to California, where I wanted to be a cheerleader for my high school. But I didn't look like the kind of person that the selection committee would choose for the cheerleading team.
I could have just given up, but instead, I organized alongside the NAACP, and we convinced the school to change the system to an election process that would allow the whole school to vote. After trying out in front of the entire student body, guess what? I won.
Those experiences fueled my fight for justice and made me the leader I am today. But my fight is far from over. This cycle, the GOP is funneling millions into extremist candidates driven by nothing more than hate and division. They’ll stop at nothing to stifle our progressive voices.
We can’t let them.
That’s why today, I’m reaching out to some of the most dedicated Democrats I know to invite them to participate in a priority survey — and your name was at the top of that list.
This is a personal request from me, John: Please, will you take a few minutes to join this survey before tonight’s midnight deadline? Your response is critical to informing our strategy in 2024.
