A Message from Gabe:

Greetings Rhode Islanders,

This week, our office hosted a Telephone Town Hall — an opportunity to discuss important issues with Rhode Islanders and share my work in the district and the Capitol. To keep receiving updates about our work, I encourage you to sign up for our District Dispatch. Due to House Communication Rules, you must subscribe TODAY, July 11, 2024.

On the call, I said that my conversations with constituents are crucial to help guide my efforts in Washington. During the event, we received questions from all over our district — from Woonsocket to Newport — and covered a wide range of issues with thousands of community members.

Among the topics we talked about were:  the need to treat gun violence as a public health crisis, my commitment to increasing accessibility to health care and affordable housing, increasing access to affordable broadband, and legislation to safeguarding and enhancing Social Security and Medicare for generations to come. Most Importantly, I spoke about how our office stands ready to assist if you ever need help with navigating federal government.

Connecting Rhode Island & Washington

Hurricane Preparedness for Our Communities

As hurricane season begins, it is crucial to understand the risks for Rhode Island and our communities.
  • Make an emergency plan with evacuation routes and communication strategies before landfall.
  • Stock up on essentials like water, food, and medications. Secure your home by protecting windows and doors.
  • Stay informed by monitoring local weather updates and following official instructions.

For most taxpayers, Monday, April 15, 2024, was the deadline to file their federal tax return, pay any tax owed, or request an extension to file.

Tax relief has been available for individuals and businesses in Kent, Newport, Providence and Washington counties that were affected by severe storms and flooding that began on December 17, 2023, and January 9, 2024.

Affected individuals and businesses have until next Monday, July 15, 2024, to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.

Connecting with Rhode Islanders

With the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicting a stronger-than-usual hurricane season, I visited the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier to learn more about how we can be prepared.

Run and operated by
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers since 2010, the barrier has been essential to protecting downtown Providence from severe storm tidal flooding.

I stopped by the Little Citizen’s Class at the Providence Children's Museum to talk with some young Rhode Islanders about my work as a Congressman, what it means to be a good citizen, and how we can all give back to our community!

Rhode Island is home to more than 18,000 residents who can trace their roots back to Cape Verde.

As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I was proud to have joined so many constituents to connect and speak on my work in Congress at the Cape Verde 49th Independence Day Festival in Providence!

From 2017-2021, 11% of guns recovered at international crime scenes lawfully came from the United States.

In response, the U.S. Department of Commerce implemented strict restrictions on gun exports.

I spoke out against a House Republican proposal that would repeal this rule and once again export gun violence abroad.

I hope everyone in Rhode Island and across our nation had a happy 4th of July!

I was honored to present Airman First Class Preston Perroni with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol at the Patriotic Exercises in Bristol — he traveled the furthest from his deployment in South Korea.

It was great to join the
Department of Housing and Urban Development
for the announcement of a $3.8 million federal investment in reducing barriers to affordable housing in Rhode Island!

Housing in our state and across the country should be stable, accessible, and safe for everyone — this grant is another step in the right direction.
