I’ve participated in the VBA Debate in the past, during my gubernatorial campaign and both my Senate campaigns, and I was looking forward to participating again on July 20.
But I have to say, I’m not surprised that my opponent is unwilling to attend.
Attending a debate means actually having to defend your record — and it would mean having to confront the fact that his message does not resonate with the majority of Virginians.
It would mean having to answer tough questions about his support for cruelly restricting women’s reproductive rights, repealing the ACA, and putting Medicare and Social Security on the chopping block.
He’d also have to answer for his ongoing loyalty to Donald Trump and his promise to release and compensate convicted January 6th insurrectionists.
I’m not afraid to debate. But if my opponent wants to hide from tough questions and instead rely on money and ads alone, I need to be ready to compete on the airwaves, too.
So I have to ask: Will you pitch in $20 or more to help me hold Hung Cao accountable? [[link removed]]

Self-described MAGA Republican Hung Cao, who recently earned his party’s nomination for U.S. Senate in Virginia, announced he would not debate Tim Kaine at the Virginia Bar Association debate on July 20.
