Our report exposes significant flaws in the industry's monitoring practices: Missed Pollution Events: Our researchers detected that industry-operated continuous emissions monitors (CEMs) at healthy sites miss nearly all pollution events. Monitor Downtime: Project Canary's "continuous" monitors are offline over 25% of the time. Lack of Action: Even when pollution is detected, fossil fuel companies rarely take action, focusing instead on profit opportunities in certification schemes.
Earthworks thermographers documented 23 emissions events over ten months in 2023. Shockingly, on-site monitors run by operators recorded just one event. This highlights the need for more reliable monitoring technology and practices. "Natural gas" production simply isn’t good for the climate. We recommend phasing out fossil fuels as the most critical step towards reducing pollution and protecting communities. Additionally, regulations prioritizing community and consumer protection must govern methane reduction efforts. Continuous emissions monitors should be deployed transparently, with publicly available data that meets peer-reviewed test conditions.
