ACTION ALERT: Protect America's Seabirds

TAKE ACTION: [link removed]

Seabirds are in crisis. Threatened by overfishing, climate change, habitat loss, and more, seabird populations around the world have decreased by 70 percent since 1950. Take action today to help their populations recover.

Seabirds like Elegant Terns and Common Murres rely on small, schooling fish known as forage fish to eat and to feed their chicks. However, forage fish are not yet included in federal fisheries management, leaving them vulnerable to overfishing. A reintroduced bill would change that, helping forage fish and seabirds rebound.

Urge your U.S. Representative to cosponsor legislation that protects our seabirds, coastal and marine habitats, and fishing economies.

The recently reintroduced Sustaining America’s Fisheries for the Future Act of 2024 would update and strengthen our nation’s only federal fisheries law. While the existing law has recovered 45 fish populations and brought overfishing to an all-time low since the 1970s, the new Act will bring it into the 21st century and fill in critical gaps for seabird protections.

This Act ensures the needs of seabirds and other predators will be accounted for when deciding how many forage fish can be caught. The legislation also factors climate change into fisheries management, prevents seabirds and other wildlife from becoming harmed by fishing gear, and provides stronger protections for coastal habitats. All these measures will help secure a healthy future for our seabirds, fisheries, and communities that rely on them.

Take action and urge your U.S. Representative to cosponsor the Sustaining America’s Fisheries for the Future Act and protect our seabirds.
