I’m going to keep this short today, but I wanted to reach out with some really good ethics news: a bipartisan group of senators came together yesterday to announce that they reached an agreement on a bill that would ban congressional stock trading!

If you’ve been following CREW’s work for a while, you know that we’ve been leading the push for this popular, necessary reform for years.

Bills to ban congressional stock trading are not exactly new, but this one is a big deal because it will be the first bill of its kind to get formal consideration by a Senate committee — in this case the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on July 24.

Most importantly, the ETHICS Act has everything we've been advocating for in a stock trading ban:

• It prohibits members of Congress from owning or trading individual stocks
• It applies to members’ spouses and family members
• It has a clear enforcement mechanism and real consequences for violating the public trust

CREW strongly endorses the ETHICS Act—and we’re eager to do everything we can to help get the bill passed into law. We need to know that Congress is working in the people's interest, not to further their own financial interests, and passing this bill would help make their priorities clear. Let’s get it done!
