If you want to point a finger at one issue wreaking havoc on democracy, it may very well be gerrymandering. Rigged maps are to blame for supercharged polarization, outright extremists on Capitol Hill, and some of the least productive Congresses in our nation’s history.

Without the dysfunction, partisanship, and hopelessness that gerrymandering creates, we may not have Trump or Trumpism today. We can’t fix our democracy without fixing gerrymandering.

That’s why I introduced the Fair Maps Act to ensure fair, balanced maps in every state. Can you please add your name as a citizen co-sponsor of my bill to end gerrymandering nationwide?

Experts have estimated that my bill would DOUBLE the number of competitive U.S. House districts nationwide, while ensuring millions of Americans had a more meaningful say in who represents them in Washington. It would:

1. Enact fair standards and nonpartisan guidelines that every state’s Congressional map would be required to meet
    
2. Standardize the mapmaking process across states — ensuring transparency and accountability for every voter and lawmaker
    
3. Create independent redistricting commissions — consisting of five Democrats, five Republicans, and five independent experts — in every state
