Dear Friends,
On Algeria's Independence Day, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that he had pardoned more than 8,000 people. According to the presidential pardon decree, Ihsane El Kadi, director of the independent media Radio M and Maghreb Émergent, could stand to benefit from this decision.
This highly respected journalist was arbitrarily and unjustly sentenced to 7 years in prison for allegedly receiving foreign funding. And yet, since this announcement, his fate still remains uncertain. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) calls on the Algerian authorities once again to release him with a full pardon.
Since Ihsane El Kadi’s sentencing, RSF has been leading an international campaign for his release. We have referred the matter to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, and to the Media Freedom Coalition. We also brought together 16 chief editors from 14 different countries, including Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitri Muratov. This mobilisation must continue. In order to continue this action on behalf of journalist Ihsane El Kadi, please support us.
