John,With one attack on democracy and established law after another over the past few weeks, it's worth a reminder of what we can do, where we hold power, and how to channel our rage into action.
Here are some ways to record your dissent:
- Practice good media literacy. Evaluate sources, biases, and conflicts of interest among news and media figures and publications. Don't take every headline at face value. Dig deeper.
- Join a local protest or demonstration. Democracy is loud. Make your dedication to the cause known alongside your neighbors in a nonviolent way.
- Check that your voter registration is current and up to date. You can do that right here.
- Know who and what is on the ballot. Everyone knows the presidential race is on the ballot this year, but so are lots of other issues! Your state may be voting to protect abortion rights, legalize marijuana, or raise the wage for our working brothers, sisters, and neighbors.
- Volunteer. Pick a race you care about and jump in! Want to volunteer with an organization like ours working on the ground to put power back in the hands of the people? Sign up here. We need you!
- Think...small? You can help uphold democracy from the city level and up. Does your county prosecutor refuse to prosecute women seeking abortions? Do your county Board of Elections commissioners pledge to certify the results of the election? Local races matter.
Remember, our state and local elected officials have a great deal of power to decide if they will arrest those experiencing homelessness for having no shelter, if they will prosecute local government officials for fraud, bribery, or other forms of corruption, and if they will try to stop women from crossing state lines to seek an abortion.
Democracy is worth protecting. We'll be doing everything we can to save it. See you out there!
