Friend, as you read this, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is on the ground in Sudan, where a colossal war is taking place.

Over a year into the ongoing war between the government-led Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), civilians are caught in the crossfire, the health care system has collapsed, and more than 8.6 million people have been forced to flee—the largest refugee crisis in the world.

The humanitarian response to this catastrophe has not been nearly great enough to meet the growing needs. MSF has been able to stay in Sudan and neighboring countries to deliver desperately-needed aid for one main reason: Our independent donors. Here’s how we’ve responded to the conflict in Sudan:

Since the war started in April 2023, MSF has: Supported facilities where more than half a million people have sought medical help. Assisted more than 8,400 births. Treated 200 patients per month with violence-related injuries. Performed more than 4,600 surgeries. Treated 30,000 children for malnutrition. SEND SUPPORT.

Our independence allows us to go wherever the medical needs are greatest and communicate with warring parties to deliver aid. As MSF often sees in conflict zones, health care itself is under attack in Sudan, and it’s civilians who are paying the heaviest price. Only 20 to 30 percent of health facilities remain functional in Sudan, meaning people are having trouble getting health care across the country.

MSF is treating women, men, and children who have been directly wounded in the fighting and crossfire, including shrapnel, blast, and gunshot injuries. Tragically, our staff members have also been put at risk as they try to provide independent medical care. On the afternoon of May 25, an MSF staff member who worked as a watchman at our pharmacy in El Fasher, Sudan, was killed when shelling hit his house.

This horrific violence must end. We’re calling on all parties to this conflict to protect civilians and aid workers.
