Dear Friend, Yesterday, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Federal Prison Oversight Act - a bill that would require independent oversight of federal prisons. This is a huge victory in our criminal justice work!
Prisons have long suffered issues with abuse, conditions, staffing, and other situations that are not and should never be part of one’s sentence. These issues run rampant when there is no independent party to hold the prisons accountable. With this new law, accountability will increase and, most importantly, so will the safety of those incarcerated. The bill is now on its way to President Biden’s desk, and he is expected to sign the bill into law. This is an incredible achievement, and it was made possible thanks to your advocacy.
