Hi John,
Keir Starmer’s new government has promised change. With the climate crisis looming, and many countries' trust in the UK stretched to breaking point, it’s going to need to deliver.

That's why we’re ready to hit the ground running and start demanding that the new government supports the Fossil Fuel Treaty, a bold and workable global exit plan from fossil fuels.

Labour’s manifesto promised it would not approve new exploration for oil and gas, or any new coal projects. Ed Miliband, the new energy secretary, declared during the election campaign that the UK will show climate leadership under a Labour government.

There’s never been a better time to push the government to focus on a globally just fossil fuel phase out.

Can you sign our petition asking the new Prime Minister to back the Fossil Fuel Treaty?
Yes, I'll sign ([link removed])
This government won the election promising not to approve new fossil fuel exploration and committing to accelerate clean power. The UK government now has a mandate for transformative climate action, and we need to make sure it makes the most of it.

Labour’s promise not to approve new fossil fuel exploration is a major win for all of us in the climate movement. It wouldn’t have happened without people like you, demanding action; showing again and again that people all across the UK want to see these toxic substances phased out for good.

The proposal for a Fossil Fuel Treaty is made up of three pillars:
1. Stop expanding fossil fuels;
2. Fairly phase out existing production
3. A globally just transition to clean energy

The UK government has almost committed to the first pillar. This is historic, but climate change is a global problem. Governments must work globally for a fair phase out if the climate crisis that is already devastating lives in the global south is to be held back.

A global exit plan from fossil fuels is also key to economic justice, for people globally and in the UK. The fossil fuel economy is failing to provide affordable, reliable energy for people all around the world. It’s leaving countries in the global south economically dependent on a dying industry.

The Fossil Fuel Treaty would see governments take the positive step of phasing out fossil fuels at home, while negotiating to make sure that neither the global south, or working people in the UK, are left to foot the bill.

We’ve already joined with some of the biggest climate networks in the UK to write to Ed Miliband and foreign secretary David Lammy and tell them to endorse the Fossil Fuel Treaty ahead of COP29 in November. If you add your voice by signing our petition it could help force them to pay attention to this vital global exit plan from fossil fuels.
