Dear John,
Things are heating up, as no less a popular figure than George Clooney called on President Biden to step aside today. While yesterday the coalition of voices proclaiming “I’m with Joe” (however weakly) was looking solid, today it’s beginning to crumble. Democratic leaders are clearly in the process of choosing whether to voice their conscience – or their political calculations.
Kudos to those like Colorado Senator Michael Bennet and Illinois Congressman Mike Quigley for saying it like it is. Senator Bennet said this last night on CNN: "I believe the entire future of our country is at stake. For me this isn’t a question about polling; it’s not a question about politics. It’s a moral question about the future of our country.”
Indeed it is.

I’m proud that our campaign has continued to stand for what so many of us feel is true, and I deeply appreciate the support of those who have enabled me to remain in the national conversation. If and when the President steps aside, we will be ready. We are the only other name on the ballot at this time, and I do not forget that we come into this moment with the votes of half a million people who voted for me in the primary season.
This is not a moment to step back but to step forward. A status quo politician will not be able to defeat Donald Trump in November. And despite the narrative that only those “qualified” and ”experienced” can do the job, today’s events clearly demonstrate that very few of those “qualified" people have the guts to stand up to the party machine. Clearly that is what their “experience” has taught them.
I do have the guts, and if you won't stand up to the DNC then I don’t see you having the guts to stand up to corporate America or to a tough world leader. I’ve had plenty of experience, by the way – which has taught me quite a few things that are useful right now. That includes first and foremost the ability to tell it like it is.
As long as you support the campaign, then I’ll keep on keeping on. My deepest thanks and my promise to continue.
