Hi John,

How sure are you that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won’t impose a home equity tax?

Here’s why I ask:

Right now, you aren’t taxed on the money that you make if you sell your home. Trudeau promised he wouldn’t impose this type of home equity tax. But it’s important to keep an eye on the issue.

When Trudeau came to power, he mandated that Canadians report the sale of their homes to the CRA even though you don’t have to pay taxes on that money. What would the CRA need that information?

Then the Trudeau government gave an advocacy group $450,000 to study and promote home equity taxes.

When the Canadian Taxpayers Federation caught Trudeau spending your tax dollars studying new home taxes, the government pinky promised it wouldn’t do it again.

But then Trudeau invited the top home equity tax lobbyist to his cabinet retreat on “affordability.”

And now Blacklock’s Reporter – an online investigative journalism site – just reported Trudeau had an hour-long “private town hall” with that same home equity tax lobbyist and supporters of higher home taxes. The group is called Generation Squeeze (yes, they chose a name that sounds similar to our youth organization, Generation Screwed). It posted a podcast with the prime minister just a few weeks ago.

You can see why taxpayers might have some trust issues on the topic of home equity taxes.

You can make sure the government knows you don’t support new home taxes by signing the online petition.

Will you sign the PETITION to stop a home equity tax?

To the Prime Minister,

Canadians work hard to build equity in their homes. They use that equity to buy new homes and provide for retirement. Proceeds from the sale of a primary residence have always been exempt from federal taxes.

A home equity tax is wrong: Canadians shouldn’t be taxed on the equity in their homes.
We, the undersigned, call on the prime minister to firmly and clearly reject any proposal for a home equity tax.
