Dear Friend, we’re sure that you’ve heard all about the first presidential debate.
But what you probably haven’t heard is how many times young people – or issues that predominantly affect young people – were mentioned at the debate.
Twice – and in both instances, by President Biden.
President Biden argued that his administration has made significant progress to combat climate change, including the passage of the most extensive climate legislation in history and the American Climate Corps initiative – the one and only time young people were directly addressed during the first presidential debate.
President Biden also briefly mentioned his administration’s progress on student debt forgiveness, but did not discuss the topic further – nor did Donald Trump or the debate moderators.
On the other side, Trump avoided the question of climate change entirely before laying into the “green new scam” and celebrating his administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. Trump spent more time celebrating his golf championship wins than acknowledging young Americans.
Notably, the debate moderators did not ask any specific questions about young people, young voters, or how either candidate would prioritize youth issues in their presidencies.
Friend, young voters are paying attention – and they aren’t satisfied with what they’re hearing. If you agree, click here to write a message to the Biden Administration – or directly call the White House comments line – to urge President Biden to give youth issues the priority they deserve. >>
