Tell Congress: Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act now

Friend,

Ensuring that every American can cast their vote freely and fairly, no matter their income, race, or zip code, is the very cornerstone of our democracy. But across the nation, the right to vote is under attack.

Since the Supreme Court gutted the heart of the Voting Rights Act eleven years ago, the fundamental promise that every American can cast their vote freely and fairly has been broken.

More than 100 state laws to restrict the vote have been enacted since the shameful Shelby decision. Dozens more are now under consideration by state legislatures, including 18 in North Carolina alone.

We’ve already seen the impact of the voter suppression laws that have passed: millions of voters across the country are facing obstacles to voting, particularly Black and brown voters, Native voters, LGBTQ+ voters, young voters, voters with disabilities, and low-income voters. The Brennan Center for Justice says that voters in almost half the country will face new voting restrictions in the upcoming election.

Further, we’ve seen the terrible results of Congressional maps being redrawn without the full protection of the VRA. Even when courts have initially determined that legislatures have unlawfully deprived communities of color of representation, states are sometimes still allowed to use discriminatory maps for elections.

Thankfully, there’s something we can do. Congress has introduced a voting rights bill that would reverse these attacks on our voting rights and strengthen voter protections: the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

Demand that your Congressional representative support and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Send your message today!

For almost 50 years, the Voting Rights Act had broad bipartisan support and was an unparalleled tool for guaranteeing access and combatting discrimination in voting. Congress must make it so again.

The answer is clear: Congress MUST pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act now. For democracy to work for all of us it must include all of us.
