Shocking news from Alaska: Wolves on Prince of Wales Island in the Tongass National Forest have been almost entirely wiped out.

With 165 wolves killed, out of a population last estimated at 170, these wolves are now on the front lines of the extinction crisis.

This despicable killing spree took place during the last trapping season. It can't stand — wolves and wildlife need to be protected, not hunted to oblivion.

We've called on the Forest Service to take immediate steps to help protect what remains of the Alexander Archipelago wolves — including implementing measures specifically created for these wolves.

This wolf population had decreased to a new low as recently as six years ago, but their numbers since had almost doubled. Now they're almost gone.

It's not only wolves that are being persecuted. Predators like bears, foxes, bobcats and others could soon become targets on national wildlife refuges. This is exactly the wrong approach.

We must act now before it's too late.

Saving wolves and other species requires us to fight for every wolfpack, every animal, every plant. It's why we're pushing a plan to protect 30% of wild places by 2030 and 50% by 2050.

The world is learning anew how interconnected we are to wildlife and habitat. This is a time when we need to protect ecosystems — and the wildlife they're made of.

So many of us are doing all we can to get through this difficult time. We can get through it, together. And we won't stop fighting for the species that are counting on us.
