Before the pandemic struck, technological innovation, declining use of physical cash and the fragile nature of our financial system all pointed to the need for a new kind of money fit for the 21st century. A CBDC would give us a truly public means of digital payment while increasing financial inclusion and improving financial stability. With the right coordination between governments and central banks, a CBDC could also enable real solutions to the current crisis like helicopter money or a basic income.
