Senate Democrats ask Attorney General Merrick Garland to name special counsel to investigate Clarence Thomas
Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Ron Wyden have demanded that the attorney general open a criminal investigation into Clarence Thomas for the "repeated and willful" omissions of gifts and income from Thomas' annual financial disclosure reports. "Appointment of a special counsel would serve the public interest...The public must have confidence that the judiciary and the Department of Justice execute their responsibilities fairly, impartially, and without respect to political expedience or partisan interests," wrote the senators in their letter, which was sent on July 3, 2024. It's long past time that Thomas was held accountable for spending decades accepting what can only be seen as bribes from some of the most radical oligarchs in the country. Get to work, Mr. Garland!

Michael Bennet becomes first Senate Democrat to publicly warn that Biden can't beat Trump
Colorado's Michael Bennet became the first Senate Democrat to publicly say President Biden can't win the election, he but stopped short of calling for him to withdraw from the race. "Donald Trump is on track ... to win this election and maybe win it by a landslide and take with him the Senate and the House," the Colorado Democrat said. This, coupled with jarring new reports that the DEEP BLUE state of New York is sliding into potential battleground territory, is alarming, to say the least. So much is at stake in November. Let's hope our party gets its shit together. Fast.

The alarming new power Trump will claim in a second term
In a new video on the MAGA cult leader's website, the disgraced felon has declared that once he gets back in the White House, he will have the power to effectively cancel any federal program — or even an entire agency — by simply refusing to spend money appropriated by Congress through a process called "impoundment." According to Trump, if Congress appropriates money that he decides is unnecessary, he has the authority to "refuse to waste the extra funds." The last president to try to do this was Richard Nixon (of COURSE), and it led to Congress passing the Impoundment Control Act, banning the practice. But Trump thinks the ban is unconstitutional, and we have a bad feeling his radical toadies on the Supreme Court might just go along with him on this democracy-busting fool's errand.

Missing transgender teen’s body found dismembered; suspect charged
The family of 14-year-old Pauly Likens had their worst fears confirmed when body parts belonging to the teen were discovered in a reservoir in western Pennsylvania. DaShawn Watkins, 29, was arrested last week in connection with Likens’ death and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. There is little doubt that fervent, right-wing attacks on transgender Americans played at least an indirect role in the gruesome murder, a grim reminder of the human cost of Republicans' dehumanizing crusade against the trans community. “Just the sheer severity of how Pauly was murdered and then cut up into pieces and put into bags and thrown into the river and various places...that alone exudes a large amount of hate to be able to do something like that," says Pamela Ladner, leader of the Shenango Valley LGBTQIA+ Alliance.

Family wants justice for Black man killed after being held down by security at Milwaukee Hyatt
Once again, a Black man has lost his life after authority figures — this time hotel security — used excessive, dangerous force against him. Details are unclear, but early reports say D’Vontaye L. Mitchell allegedly walked into the women's bathroom, which started the confrontation. Mitchell died after multiple security officers knelt on his back outside the hotel for 7 to 10 minutes. The preliminary ruling of the medical examiner's office is a homicide. "It reminds of George Floyd. Watching that video, the only thing is he didn't scream for his mother, but he was screaming," said a witness.

Israeli airstrike on school sheltering refugees kills 29, mostly women and children
For the fourth time in three days, the IDF has bombed a Gaza school and killed dozens of innocent civilians. Al Jazeera has released footage showing a youth soccer game underway when the airstrikes hit. The Palestinian Red Crescent says its teams are receiving “dozens of humanitarian distress calls” from residents in Gaza City, but said its ambulance vehicles and medics are unable to reach them. It is striking to see how the Russian missile strike on a children's hospital earlier this week — a gross and appalling act — immediately sparked furious condemnation and outrage from the international community while Israeli forces commit such atrocities on a daily basis with very little response from the White House, 10 Downing Street, or the French presidential palace. Balakrishnan Rajagopal, UN special rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, wrote on Twitter that there is “famine across the whole of Gaza. All houses destroyed, food systems destroyed and healthcare destroyed. And kids are dying. Is there any humanity left?”
Biden addresses NATO summit
The United States is hosting NATO leaders for the 75th anniversary of the defensive alliance that has found new purpose with Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which drags on into its third year with no end in sight. “Today, NATO is more powerful than ever — 32 nations strong! It’s good we're stronger than ever because this moment in history calls for our collective strength,” declared an invigorated President Biden. “This is a pivotal moment for Europe and the transatlantic community, and I might add to the world." He's not wrong there. If Donald Trump manages to win in November, this could be the last time the US attends the NATO summit.
Study finds toxic metals present in popular tampons
An alarming new study found popular brands of tampons used around the world may contain toxic metals, such as lead and arsenic. Metals absorbed vaginally enter directly into the body, without detoxification, the study noted. Despite more than half of those who menstruate in the United States using tampons, the researchers said theirs was the first endeavor to assess the concentration of metals in tampons, an incredibly worrying and not at all surprising revelation.
Biden blames Texas officials for delayed federal response to Beryl
Ahh, natural disasters and Texas Republicans fleeing the state — name a more iconic duo! This time it's Gov. Greg Abbott, who flitted off to Asia while Hurricane Beryl filled the streets of Houston (and many other towns in South Texas) with floodwaters. Millions of Texans are without electricity and eight people are dead after the storm's ravages, and it could take months to restore power to everyone — a dangerous proposition during the hottest summer on record. None of that seems too concerning to Abbott or Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who has been "slow" to respond to the Biden administration's disaster declaration and are needlessly delaying the delivery of aid. The storm hit on Monday morning, and it wasn't until Tuesday afternoon that the Biden team was able to finally reach Patrick, who is filling in while Abbott is gallivanting abroad. That's GOP leadership for ya!
