Dear John,64 per cent want the transition period to be extended ‘indefinitely until the crisis is resolved’.A large majority of the public want the government focused entirely on the crisis at hand. You may have seen our polling covered in the Independent last week: we found two-thirds of the public support an extension to the transition period. We can now reveal that most people would prefer a longer extension until the coronavirus crisis has been dealt with. A majority of Britons would support an unspecified extension to the transition period, to allow for the best deal to be struck, and to avoid a double whammy of No Deal Brexit and coronavirus induced recession. Already, thousands of Best for Britain supporters have joined our campaign in support of extension. Will you join them? Our data shows most Brits want a long Brexit extension to deal with coronavirus – including 43% of Leave voters. You can read the full breakdown of our findings here! This global pandemic has overturned many of our priorities and shaken up traditional politics. That’s why we’re pleased to report 44% of Conservative voters, as well as over a quarter of Brexit Party voters, support an indefinite extension to the transition period. Numerous trade groups, the Scottish and Welsh governments, and the IMF Managing Director have all urged the government to do the right thing and seek an extension. But this makes it all the more troubling that our government seems not to be listening, and choosing to plough ahead with an arbitrary timetable. Will you join me in urging our government to secure an extension, and focus on Covid-19? Some people may be frustrated with the idea of prolonging the Brexit transition period. But our data shows the overwhelming majority accept that saving lives comes first. It’s time for the government to live up to its mantra and ‘do whatever it takes’ to overcome this crisis. Let’s defeat coronavirus now and make a deal with Europe later. Best wishes Naomi Smith P.S. Our data shows the vast majority of Britons would support extending transition for however long it takes to properly deal with coronavirus. You can read the full analysis here. |
