Congressman Al Green and Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Thank President Biden Following Urgent Request for Emergency Funding After Hurricane Beryl Damages Houston and Surrounding Counties

(Houston, TX) — On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, Congressman Al Green penned a letter addressed to President Biden, thanking him for approving a Federal Emergency Disaster Declaration to help with the recovery from Hurricane Beryl in the Greater Houston area and nearby counties. The announcement was followed by a letter sent on July 8, 2024, to the Biden Administration from Congressman Green and Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia requesting urgent emergency funding, which can be also be accessed online here

The communique highlights reports indicating that the greater Houston area has endured serious damage resulting in seven deaths and hundreds of thousands of Texans without power facing high temperatures. The requested funding will be intended to ensure constituents’ safety and provide essential resources for communities.

“I am grateful to President Biden for acting swiftly to approve a federal emergency disaster declaration for Texas following Hurricane Beryl. This will make a significant difference in the lives of the hard-working families, children, and seniors across the Houston region now focused on recovering after this destructive storm. My colleague, Rep. Green, and I are committed to continuing to work with the Biden administration to ensure our constituents have access to the resources they need to rebuild moving forward,” said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia.

Congressman Al Green stated, “We have yet another natural disaster impacting many vulnerable constituents. I am deeply saddened and express my condolences for the lives lost due to the impact of Hurricane Beryl. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones affected by this unfortunate devastation. While we can’t compensate for the loss of life, we can at least improve the quality of life for others. Together with Representative Garcia, we thank the Biden administration for assisting with emergency funds to facilitate the recovery and rebuilding efforts for the greater Houston area including our smaller cities and the surrounding counties impacted by this unfortunate event.”
