This certainly is one of the most stressful times in living memory. We are all sheltering at home, schools have closed for the year, businesses shuttered, record numbers of people are filing for unemployment assistance. And here is Florida our tourism based economy is imploding.
The combination health and economic punch to the face is real and stressing everyone out. As a small business owner with a payroll to meet and still no PPP loan relief, I'm the first to attest that the stress is real.
Which brings me to Marijuana. Not because people are stressed, but because our Florida economy is stressed. Marijuana is now a multi-billion dollar business across 11 states. States like Washington, Michigan and Illinois will make hundreds of millions in tax revenue this year alone, all from Marijuana. Money for schools, roads, and yes, unemployment insurance.
Florida won't. Why, because we have antiquated laws that make recreational marijuana illegal.
More than ever, Florida needs this tax revenue. We need new business. We need every tool in our tool box to help the Florida economy recover from COVID-19. And Marijuana can be one of those tools.
Also, and i really can't say this enough, the government should not be regulating things that don't need to be regulated. The burden of proof so to speak is on why marijuana should be regulated, not why grown adults should be free to make their own decisions whenever practical. We don't regulate smoking or alcohol to this level and there's no scientific reason to keep doing it.
So, on this 4/20 join me in calling on our legislature to catch up with the rest of the country and stop fighting the will of Floridians. Let's legalize marijuana, tax it and regulate it to keep it safe and let's not let Florida be left out. Not now.
Join me and let's fight #onward,
