Much to the chagrin of one Donald J. Trump, Project 2025 is quickly shaping up to be a defining issue in this election. The Heritage Foundation’s blueprint for a fascist makeover of the U.S. government has gone from being a topic of fascination for fringe political junkies to a prominent story in the mainstream media.
Not surprisingly, the idea of a far-right, Christian nationalist dystopia is deeply unappealing to most voters and so now Trump is scrambling to distance himself from it. He took to Truth Social and claimed that he knows “nothing” about Project 2025 and has “no idea” who’s behind it. This absurd lie would be a lot easier to swallow if Project 2025’s leadership wasn’t absolutely packed to the gills with former Trump administration officials — from the peerlessly bizarre Ben Carson to his fellow convicted felon Peter Navarro, among many others. It’s a deeply rooted tentacle of the Trump campaign.
Crucially, Project 2025 provides an unvarnished look at exactly what a second Trump administration would entail. The first one was just a dry run. They’ve had time to study where they failed and to pinpoint the structural weaknesses in our institutions.

The fact that Trump is now desperate to disassociate himself from it shows you that we’ve hit a nerve by focusing on this issue. Americans simply do not want the nightmarish MAGA future envisioned in detail by Trump and his minions. Clearly, Trump was hoping that he could win this election on bluster and fear-mongering alone and avoid any close examination of his actual policy plans. Unfortunately for him, those policy plans have moved to the front and center of election coverage.
Voters will head to the ballot box in November fully aware that a Trump victory would mean a national abortion ban, a psychopathic mass deportation program that would tear American communities apart, and attacks on contraception, the abortion pill, IVF, gay marriage, and transgender rights. The government will go back to treating climate change like a hoax, the Muslim ban would return, and guns would flood our streets. Atop it all would sit a convicted felon wielding absolute presidential immunity as he robs the American people blind and kicks down the last pillars propping up our democracy.
Project 2025 is in every sense an existential threat to the American experiment. Republics have fallen to far less before and the Republicans are well-organized, well-funded, and utterly ruthless in the application of their deranged ideology. It would be a dire mistake to underestimate these people or to dismiss these criticisms as hysteria.
Thankfully, there is a very straightforward solution to the problem and I’ll be shouting it from the rooftops until Election Day. I’ll go blue in the face trying to turn this country blue. Because it really is simple: We have to vote.
We have to elect Democrats and convince everyone we know to help. Part of that convincing should involve spreading awareness of Project 2025. It’s easy as telling a friend or two to Google it. Even a cursory glance at one of the countless explainers available online will be enough to convince most people to run screaming from the GOP. As it turns out, the only way to save democracy is to exercise its most essential right.
Stay focused, stay energized.

PRE-ORDER “SHAMELESS”
I’ve written my first book, titled “Shameless.” The book lays bare the long con of the Republican Party, illuminating the dangers of the ever-widening gulf between the vaunted Republican brand and their actual behavior; how the media has proven itself a willful participant in this farce; and how Democrats can rebalance the political landscape. Featuring insights from Jen Psaki, Pete Buttigieg, among others, and with a foreword by Jamie Raskin, Shameless will be essential reading as we head toward November. DON'T BE A MITCH FUND
The "Don't Be A Mitch" campaign is back after a hugely successful 2022 cycle, having raised $1.2 million for voter registration groups ahead of the midterm elections. This year, with a tough Senate map, we have no room for error. I put together a list of organizations from 5 key states (Montana, Ohio, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Missouri) that I think are best situated to ensure that the Senate stays in Democrats' hands. Any amount helps!
