FROM OUR FRIENDS AND ALLIES
Victory! Local activists defeat power plant proposal
On June 17, a private equity owned entity, Danskammer Energy, withdrew its application to build a fracked gas power plant in Newburgh, NY, on the banks of the Hudson River. If built, this plant would have been a significant contributor to local air pollution, as well as emitting the greenhouse gasses that cause global warming. Over a six year fight, a broad coalition of local climate groups, along with 25 local municipalities, persuaded New York's Department of Environmental Conservation to deny Danskammer key air quality permits. This is a huge victory over fossil fuel expansion in New York. Congratulations to them all!
