The ADVANCE Act is an effort to spur American nuclear energy leadership led by the Committee on Environment and Public Works Ranking Member, and Roosevelt Conservation Caucus member, Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV). The ADVANCE Act enjoys broad bipartisan support, having passed the Senate by a vote of 88–2 and the House of Representatives by a vote of 393–13. “The ADVANCE Act will help preserve and expand the use of clean and reliable nuclear energy, which is essential to advancing America’s energy, national security, and environmental interests,” said ConservAmerica Vice President of Policy Todd Johnston. “America’s 93 operating nuclear reactors generate about 20 percent of our nation’s electricity and more than half of our carbon-free energy. New nuclear reactors will also provide reliability and diversity to our electric infrastructure, particularly as we simultaneously seek to add more renewable sources to the grid.” Among other provisions, the ADVANCE Act will reduce regulatory costs for companies seeking to license advanced nuclear reactor technologies; help strengthen nuclear fuel cycle and supply chain infrastructure; address the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) workforce needs and spur efficiency in the nuclear reactor licensing process; and, it allows the NRC, along with the Departments of Energy and Commerce, to lead international forums concerning the safe development of advanced nuclear technologies.
