On this day in 1868, the 14th Amendment of the Constitution was ratified, and American democracy was fundamentally changed, for the better. 

The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the U.S., including formerly enslaved people, and it ensured equal protection under the law, laying the groundwork for all of the subsequent landmark civil rights legislation that followed. 

The 14th Amendment has been used as the basis to expand our rights and fight discrimination for over a century and a half. But we are facing some serious challenges right now. Voting rights, equality, and even our democracy itself are all under threat by MAGA extremists.
