Senate Republicans recently blocked legislation that would federally codify access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. This is a giant setback and is preventing our Democratic lawmakers from protecting and expanding reproductive rights.
IVF has helped millions of individuals and couples grow their families and become parents. Removing access to IVF treatments will impact those who cannot have children on their own for various reasons.
Democrats introduced this protective legislation in response to a recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling, which recognized frozen embryos as people, and would make IVF treatment illegal due to the necessary practices of discarding embryos. The Court’s ruling will likely lead to more restrictive regulations and legal uncertainties nationwide. It’ll surely make it even harder for individuals to access IVF care, but it could also jeopardize other forms of reproductive healthcare.
