MADISON, Wis. ? The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced the renewal of a Green Tier participation contract with Chart Energy and Chemicals (Chart) in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The agreement with Chart is a continuation of the original Tier 2 contract signed in 2017.
The?DNR?s Green Tier program?provides credible recognition to organizations committed to going above and beyond compliance to achieve superior environmental performance. Tier 2 participants agree to meet rigorous eligibility requirements, which are negotiated into participation contracts with the DNR and interested parties. These contracts enable significant environmental improvements by providing incentives and support from the DNR in return for implementing an environmental management system.
Chart designs and manufactures cryogenic equipment used in many parts of the liquid gas supply chain. Chart?s products are used in the separation of oxygen, nitrogen and noble gases in the processing of natural gas. In addition, their distribution and storage divisions produce products that are fundamental to the delivery and end-use of liquid gases in many industrial and energy applications.
Chart has implemented an environmental management system certified to the ISO 14001 standard and has demonstrated a commitment to superior environmental performance as a Tier 2 participant. Their recent environmental accomplishments include the installation of monitors on key equipment to assess electrical usage data to understand where they can improve energy efficiency.
As a result, Chart has retrofitted equipment with variable frequency drive compressors for a 20% improvement in energy use, installed new roofing material on their facility?s 300,000 square foot roof, installed a more efficient boiler to reduce gas consumption by 33% and implemented a helium usage reduction program to cut helium use by 60%.
?Chart?s operation in La Crosse is proud to continue its partnership with the Wisconsin DNR through the Green Tier program, and, as a global company, Chart continues to lead the industry in the green energy transition, targeting cryogenic process technologies and equipment for the Nexus of CleanTM ? clean power, clean water, clean food and clean industrials, regardless of molecule,? said Harry Labbe, Chart?s vice president and general manager of cryogenics.
This renewed contract includes updates to the previous version and extends the company?s Tier 2 status for five years. Under the 2024 contract, Chart will continue to implement its environmental management system, undertake all required audits and submit an annual report to the DNR.
