Big City Reads Returns

Our friends at Nottingham City of Literature have launched this year’s Big City Reads! They’ll be giving away over *2,000* books to inspire young people across the city to discover the joy of reading. Keep an eye out for the four featured titles, which will soon be available at your local library.

THePETEBOX comes to Central Library
Left Lion

Local newspaper Left Lion is launching a series of live interviews at Nottingham Central Library with their favourite artists connected to Nottingham. These Friday evening events will feature discussions on creativity, led by the Left Lion team, followed by an audience Q&A.

The first interview will feature THePETEBOX, a YouTube sensation, leading UK human beatboxer, and 2023 semi-finalist on BBC's The Voice. The conversation will be recorded and released as a podcast for later listening.

The Birth of Pride Exhibition
Niche

Niche Artefact presents a unique and glamourous event to kickstart Nottingham's pride season. 'Birth of Pride', is their sixth showcase and the first in collaboration with the Nottingham Central Library.  

This glamorous event begins with a red-carpet entrance and a prosecco reception upon arrival. Guests will have the opportunity to mingle with live performers and local artists, who will reveal one-of-a-kind, never-before-seen pieces of artwork. As we draw back the red crushed velvet curtains, the “Birth of Pride” exhibition will officially kickstart Nottingham’s pride season.

Our City Our Stories Anthology
Our city

Our City, Our Stories is a creative project about gathering and sharing the community’s stories, your stories!

From January to April 2024, six local libraries - *Bilborough*, *Dales Centre*, *Radford-Lenton*, *The Meadows*, *Southglade Park*, and *St Ann’s Valley *hosted creative workshops to capture these stories.

Participants engaged in conversations, shared ideas, and collaboratively crafted stories based on their experiences. Six talented local writers helped create a space for everyone to share their thoughts and enjoy the stories of others.

New Work Clubs in Libraries

We’re relaunching Work Clubs at six more libraries around the city this month – *Bilborough, Clifton, Dales Centre, Hyson Green, St Ann’s Valley and the Meadows*. This adds to the existing provision at Basford, Bulwell Riverside and Southglade Park Library.

Drop in during session times to speak to an advisor about your options and next steps, get help brushing up your CV, applying for jobs or identifying training or qualifications needed to help you get into work.

Christy Fearn Talk:  Byron - 200 Years of Fame

Join Christy Fearn for a lecture-cum-performance all about Byron's life and his fame, including his letters and poems; with reference to the experiences of more contemporary famous figures.

Moira Hodgkinson Talk: Living Witchcraft

See Me is an inspirational living history project led by Fifth Word Theatre in partnership with Nottingham City Libraries, supported by Nottingham Playhouse and funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund. The exhibition celebrates the project and those involved.

Cinemas in Nottingham

Did you know that picture houses began to appear from around 1910 in Nottingham? How many picture houses were there in Nottingham at the height of cinema going – and do any of the buildings still remain? 

Discover what it would have been like to go to the pictures in those early days and how that experience changed through the 20th century at our next Marsh Forum meeting, where Graham Woodward will present an illustrated talk on the history of *'Cinemas in Nottingham'.*

Storytime and Crafts with author Paul Toms!

Author Paul Toms will read his new book, "Sloathar the Sloth," at the jungle-themed storytime in our Immersive Room. Following the reading, there will be a lively rhymetime session, and children can create rainforest-inspired masterpieces in our Creative Lab.
