US House to Consider Measure Requiring Proof of Citizenship for Voter Registration As a measure requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections is set to make its way to the U.S. House floor later this week, Democrats are being prompted to vote “No” on the new legislation. Lawmakers will vote on the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require applicants to present documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. It was introduced by Republican U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (TX—21) in early May.

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark has urged her fellow Democrats to vote against it, claiming there has been no evidence of election fraud.

Tech billionaire and Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to social media to share his thoughts on the bill. He described [[link removed]] opponents of the legislation as "traitors."

Debra McClure reports [[link removed]] that the plan would include preprinted, sequentially numbered paper ballots that can be audited. UT Austin Students Arrested in April Riots to Receive Academic Probation, Suspensions Some University of Texas at Austin students arrested during pro-Palestinian riots in April will receive academic probation or suspension from the school. Luca Cacciatore reports [[link removed]] at least four students received emails from the university accusing them of misbehavior during the spring protests.

Three of the four will receive a form of probation known as “deferred suspension,” which allows them to remain students as long as they do not violate any additional university rules. A fourth student, accused of damaging property, will be suspended from all UT Austin premises for two years. Tarrant County College Continues Ethnicity-Based Hiring Practices Recently uncovered internal documents reveal Tarrant County College may still have an ethnicity-based Faculty Recruitment and Retention Plan despite a new state law prohibiting the practice. A former TCC employee provided The Dallas Express with a copy of the college's Faculty Recruitment and Retention Plan, which states its current goal is to hire more Hispanic employees.

Reginald Gates, the vice chancellor for communications and external affairs at TCC told Texas Scorecard that the plan was never implemented.

Yet, TCC Trustee Laura Pritchett told The Dallas Express the plan was approved by previous trustees and the current board needs to revisit it in light of the state's new law. Amarillo Council Likely to Put Charter Amendments Before Voters Thomas Warren reports [[link removed]] the Amarillo City Council is set to consider a charter amendment election for November that will include one item previously rejected by voters. The amendments would restructure the city’s government.

Notably, one would reduce the requirements to recall a member of the council. At the same time, another would add two additional seats to the city council and introduce mandatory residency districts for three seats. A third would clarify the relationship between the city council and the city manager in the city’s hiring practices.

Lastly, the council could ask voters to reconsider a proposal that was defeated: extending the members' terms to four years each. This new proposal, though, would limit officeholders to two terms. Quote-Unquote
