Hello,
Last week, Washington Post reporter Robert Klemko tweeted: "Last month was the first March without a school shooting in the United States since 2002." Sadly, we can’t say that this is the result of enacting commonsense gun reform. It’s only because our schools are closed due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.
Twenty-one years later, many of us can still vividly remember seeing the news reports of a shooting at Columbine High School. It was so horrible, so shocking, it felt like we’d never see another school shooting on that scale in our lifetimes. But then it happened again... and again... and again.
Even after the Sandy Hook shooting and the Parkland shooting, we still believed things would change. We hoped that when our kids organized the National School Walkout two years ago, that it would finally be the catalyst for action.
Yet NRA-backed Republicans, like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, are still standing in the way of commonsense gun reform. And right now, in the middle of the worst pandemic in over a century, it's actually easier to buy a gun than to get tested for COVID-19 in some parts of our country.
Enough is enough.
As soon as the COVID-19 pandemic is over, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell must call for debate and a vote on universal background check legislation. If you agree, sign the petition now.
It's been more than a year since the House of Representatives passed H.R. 8, a bipartisan universal background checks bill.
Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to allow the Senate to debate or vote on this commonsense bill.
Our children, our families, and our neighbors cannot wait for another mass shooting before Congress takes action to break the cycle of gun violence.
Together, let us honor the lives lost in Columbine, and every mass shooting since, by taking action and fighting for lasting change. Join me in demanding a vote on universal background checks.
Thank you,
Bob Casey
