It’s time for fiscal discipline...

Hello
John,

With the budgeting process underway during an unprecedented health and economic crisis, the City needs, now more than ever, to demonstrate fiscal responsibility and discipline.

** Here are two no-brainers:
------------------------------------------------------------
1. The Mess on Ash Street: Taxpayers are paying $540,000 per month in rent for an empty building, despite new evidence ([link removed]) that the building is not fit for its intended use. This needs to STOP NOW. That’s why I urged Mayor Kevin Falconer to immediately discontinue all expenditures related to the 101 Ash Street building, other than investigations led by the City Auditor, and to evaluate options for extricating the City from this White Elephant. Read my full statement HERE ([link removed]) .
2. Salary Increases: Last year, voters passed a measure ([link removed]) that will substantially increase the salaries for City elected officials beginning in December. Public officials should not accept salary increases while constituents are suffering job losses, many businesses are closing, and neighborhood services are on the chopping block due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is simply not the time. That’s why I will voluntarily forgo any salary increases until we are out of this crisis, and I’m urging my colleagues and all candidates for City offices to do the same.

I also want to invite you to the third installment in the “House Calls” webinar series I’ve been hosting through my council office ([link removed]) . This week, I’m joined by some heroes:

Clinical nurse at UCSD Health Katie Moss; associate dean of advanced practice programs at USD Dr. Karen Macauley; assistant director of nursing quality, education, development, and research at UCSD Health Dr. Heather Warlan; and associate dean at the USD Hahn School of Nursing Dr. Kathy Marsh, will share their experiences on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The webinar will begin at 5 p.m. TODAY via Zoom.

You can register for the webinar HERE ([link removed]) , and submit question for our experts to [email protected].

Again, I want to wish you and yours good health, security, and optimism. If you need anything during these trying times, please contact my council office ([link removed]) anytime.

You can also reply to this email if you have any comments, questions, concerns, or some words of wisdom. I read every response. I take every suggestion to heart. And I’ve been continuously energized by every word of encouragement that continues to convince me that San Diego’s best days are still ahead of us!

Thank you all,
