John,
In the aftermath of the January 6th insurrection, nearly two hundred corporations and industry groups said they would pause or altogether stop making political contributions to the 147 members of Congress who voted against certifying the election.
CREW has been tracking corporate donors to those members, known as the Sedition Caucus, since then — and we have some big updates. We’ve been tracking which companies are following through on their promises, and which have decided to put millions of dollars behind both the Sedition Caucus and other members of Congress who have used their positions of power to push the Big Lie and enable insurrectionists.
First, there is some good news:
Of the 230 companies that originally committed not to give to those members of Congress, several dozen, including major international corporations like Nike, Lyft and eBay, have continued to make good on their pledge to make sure their political giving does not fund anti-democratic members of Congress.
These companies show it is possible to forgo the potential short-term benefits of political contributions for the longer-term health of our democracy, and they deserve recognition. We hope that these companies continue to maintain these commitments and that other companies will follow suit.
But, here’s the bad news:
More than 1,700 companies have made contributions to congressional election deniers and insurrection enablers, including nearly 200 companies that originally committed not to give.
- Koch Industries has donated $1.6 million
- AT&T has donated $1.2 million
- American Crystal Sugar has donated $1.1 million
- Lockheed Martin has donated $1 million
- UPS has donated $980,000
And those are just the top five John!
Listen, the threat posed to democracy that was so apparent on January 6th, 2021 has not gone away. These members of Congress have continued to push election lies and blocked accountability for efforts to erode our democracy.
Bankrolling election deniers is a choice, and these companies have doubled down. Now it’s up to us to hold them accountable.
