John, Rampant Supreme Court corruption has decimated the public's trust in the highest Court. Investigative reporting from ProPublica found that Justice Clarence Thomas accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts from billionaire Harlan Crow and Justice Alito accepted and failed to disclose costly gifts from billionaire Paul Singer. In both cases, the ideological and business interests of the benefactors were represented in the Supreme Court. The lack of ethical standards corresponds with Court decisions that have disproportionately harmed vulnerable communities. While the Supreme Court announced a new code of ethics last year amidst growing public outrage and Congressional scrutiny over undisclosed gifts, it failed to create any new requirements on gifts or disclosures to address these concerns. It also leaves compliance to the Justices themselves, effectively meaning it can’t be enforced. The only way to stop this rampant Supreme Court corruption is for Congress to step in and hold justices accountable. Tell Congress: Create a comprehensive, enforceable code of conduct for the Supreme Court. To protect the promise of equal justice under the law and regain the public’s trust, the Supreme Court must be restored to a nonpartisan branch free from outside influence. The Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency (SCERT) Act would require the Supreme Court to set up an enforceable code of conduct and bolster requirements for financial disclosures and case recusal for justices. If we want fair and unbiased rulings from the Supreme Court, we must hold its justices accountable to the standards we’ve set for other public offices. Tell Congress: Pass the SCERT Act.
