As we honor BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month this July, we at The Trevor Project are dedicated to amplifying BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) voices within the LGBTQ+ community. We are committed to sharing findings from our newly released national survey, which sheds light on the unique challenges faced by BIPOC LGBTQ+ youth.
Our survey revealed critical insights into the mental health of BIPOC LGBTQ+ young people:
- Mental Health Struggles: 52% of BIPOC LGBTQ+ young people reported seriously considering suicide in the past year, with 19% attempting suicide.
- Discrimination and Rejection: 67% faced discrimination based on their race or ethnicity, and 49% encountered rejection related to their LGBTQ+ identity.
- Support Networks: Young people who felt supported by their family had significantly lower rates of suicidal thoughts and attempts.
