Promotion of children: SRHR, advocacy and youth participation project launch

The Eastern Cape’s Nelson Mandela Bay municipality and Amathole Districts are focus communities for the implementation of the Promotion of children: SRHR, advocacy and youth participation project, as it was launched by Sonke in partnership with Kindernothilfe in May. The project seeks to strengthen the rights of children and youth by protection against sexual and gender-based violence and promoting advocacy in the Eastern Cape.

Integrated Development Plan and Social Audit Training in Kwa-Zulu Natal

Generation Gender South Africa led various capacity strengthening workshops for youth in the KwaZulu Natal in April this year, to capacitate civil society organizations on social audits and municipal Integrated Development Plans. Young people meaningfully participated and represented their driving change towards the prevention of gender-based violence and promoting social and gender justice, through this process.

Youth voices key to realizing a gender-equal society

Sonke ran a Youth Series Campaign, against the backdrop of June dubbed Youth Month in South Africa. The series profiled Sonke youth on the contributions they make to civil society, advocating for gender justice, meaningful and inclusive youth participation and prevention of gender-based violence in their respective spaces.

LGBTQI+ Pride

USAID Khutlo Activity implemented in Lesotho, celebrated the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on 18 May 2024 in Maseru, supported by local partner,The People’s Matrix. IDAHOBIT Day is a global initiative that is set aside to raise awareness about discrimination, violence and challenges faced by the LGBTQI+ community.

DONOR CORNER

Sonke would like to thank all the donors without whom its work would not be possible. In this edition’s Donor Corner, we focus on the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, NORAD. Sonke’s partnership with Norad has been fundamental in the promotion and protection of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), which Sonke sees as essential for achieving gender equality, and a precondition for sustainable development and social justice.
