Support Anti-Drug Advocates in Congress

With primary election season in full swing, I want to give you some exciting updates about what we’ve been doing at Protect Our Kids PAC.

At Protect Our Kids, we have taken the time to identify candidates for the House and Senate that will be strong anti-drug advocates in Congress. We also want to ensure that we are maximizing the impact of contributions from generous supporters like you. That’s why we focus on candidates running in tight races, where even a small donation makes an impact.

The best part about our strategy is that it’s working. In three of the most closely followed primaries nationwide, Protect Our Kids-supported candidates won their elections. In Maryland, Democrat Senate Candidate Angela Alsobrooks beat pro-drug Congressman David Trone, a liquor magnate and billionaire who poured more than $60 million of his own money into the campaign. Angela has criticized marijuana liberalization for increasing crime and recently supported a measure in Prince George's County, Maryland to restrict the location of marijuana dispensaries. Despite Trone holding a 21-point lead in February, Angela won the May primary by over 10 points.

Protect Our Kids efforts’ led to three solid primary-winning House candidates: Democrat Rudy Salas (CA-22), Republican Jeff Hurd (CO-3), and Julie Fedorchak (ND-01).

Two notes about these candidates:

Rudy consistently fought against the marijuana industry’s agenda during his decade-long tenure in the California State Assembly. He voted against prohibiting workplace marijuana testing, authorizing medical marijuana use in schools, and expanding the marijuana industry’s power in the state. He even introduced a bill to ban marijuana products shaped like gummies. Rudy faces pro-SAFE Banking Act Republican Congressman David Valadao in the general election.

Jeff Hurd is an attorney and Colorado native who knows first-hand how disastrous marijuana legalization has been for his home state. Jeff will bring the lessons learned from Colorado’s marijuana experiment to Congress and work on drug policy issues with an emphasis on protecting youth. Jeff publicly thanked Protect Our Kids after we endorsed his candidacy with a strong statement of support.

We are thrilled that Protect Our Kids-backed candidates have advanced to the general election, but our work is only just beginning. We can only continue to help Congressional candidates who will fight for your kids’ future with support from people like you.
